The 1884 Victoria Young Head Sovereign with Shield Back reverse is a historic and highly collectible piece from the Victorian era. Struck in 22-carat gold, this coin features Queen Victoria’s youthful portrait, known as the “Young Head,” designed by William Wyon. The reverse presents the Royal Arms in a shield design—used during the early reign of Victoria before the St George and the Dragon design was reintroduced.

This edition is one of the most sought-after sovereigns by collectors due to its elegant design and limited surviving numbers in good condition.

Gold sovereigns are exempt from Capital Gains Tax (CGT), making them a tax-efficient choice for UK buyers.

Design Details

The obverse features the Young Head portrait of Queen Victoria, engraved by William Wyon, with the inscription “VICTORIA DEI GRATIA.” Depending on the year, Wyon’s initials (“WW”) appear either incuse or in relief on the lower neck.

The reverse showcases the Royal Arms in a crowned shield surrounded by the inscription “BRITANNIARUM REGINA FID: DEF:” with a die number or mintmark located just above the rose.

Coins may be from the London Mint or Sydney Mint, with variations in design and mintmarks adding to their collectibility.

History of the Victoria Shield Back Sovereign

Introduced in 1838, the Young Head design marked Queen Victoria’s coronation at just 18 years old. The Shield Back reverse remained in use until 1874, when the St George and the Dragon design by Benedetto Pistrucci was reintroduced. These early sovereigns are widely regarded as the foundation of modern British gold coinage and are prized both for their artistry and historical value.

With many examples melted down or heavily worn over time, surviving coins in strong condition are increasingly hard to find—making this 1884 edition a standout piece in any collection.
